An iPhone App for Documenting and Sharing Hikes

For those who double as both technologically savvy and outdoor adventurers, we ran across AccuTerra, a cool-looking iPhone application that allows you to map, journal and share your hikes.

Built around a library of geographically and topographically detailed maps, the primary purpose of the application is to help users discover and plan hikes before taking trips, as well as document actual hikes with GPS tracking, place marks and pictures. If you take those pictures with the iPhone, AccuTerra geotags their latitude and longitude position with the iPhone’s native GPS (assuming you’re within GPS range). The app’s built-in share feature allows you to then post that hike to your Facebook wall.

AccuTerra includes a map store with state and regional maps, as well as high-resolution hiking maps of national parks, state parks and recreational areas. The application and the individual maps are not free, but the ability to purchase only those maps you’re interested in is handy because it allows you to customize your library.

I haven’t experimented with AccuTerra just yet, but am definitely intrigued. If you have used the app, or if you do pick it up and play with it, please let us know what you think.

Much better than Aunt Selma and Aunt Patty's vacation slide shows, but not as good as being there. Click here...
