In 2006, the Adventure Travel Trade Association conducted their first annual Adventure Travel Business Survey. One of the most interesting findings was that more than half of all adventure travelers were women ages 41-60. This led many in the industry to take a fresh look at what was previously an under-considered group. More recent research shows that women’s adventure travel is more than just a passing trend. It’s here to stay.
- A recent survey by HostelBookers.com revealed that 74% of respondents considered themselves ’solo travelers’, and 67% regularly travel alone (once or twice a year).
- Among the most requested and best selling packages offered by many travel and hospitality organizations is the “girlfriend getaway”.
- According to Road and Travel Magazine, women influence 85% of all travel decisions.
- Women will spend an estimated $125 billion on travel next year.
All of these are fascinating when you sit back and think about it. Other trends in the aging of the U.S. population, the determination of the Boomer generation to not get old, and increasing independence and empowerment of women of all ages suggest that adventure will continue to enjoy a meaningful place in the hearts of women travelers.
